Sara Hickman Covers "Love is There"
on New Album: Absence of Blame
Before Grace recorded her first album, back when she was hunting for time to write songs between classes, she found herself one evening in La Grange, TX, competing in a Sunday Showcase songwriting contest at the Bugle Boy. Little did she know that Sara Hickman was one of the judges. Grace didn't come out on top that day, but Sara was particularly taken with her song "Love is There," and mentioned to Grace that she thought it might be a good fit on Sara's new record.
After their short conversation, Sara realized that she was speaking to the daughter of Pierce Pettis, a good friend. Sara recalls singing to Grace and her brothers when they were little children in the back seat of their father's van, as Pierce struggled with maps at the wheel.
A few months later, Grace received an e-mail from her father letting her know that Sara was attempting to hunt her down so that she could get permission to cover "Love is There" on her next album. Sara has just released her album. "Love is There" is the final track on the new release: Absence of Blame.
Sara Hickman is the 2010 State Musician of Texas. Check out her music if you haven't already and get your copy of the new album!

"November 19, 2009 - Alabama native Grace Pettis was a co-winner of the 2009 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest for performing songwriters, which was held the evening prior to this Mountain Stage recording. Although she has songwriting in her genes — singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis is her father — Mountain Stage host Larry Groce says he chose her on the strength of her own songs and performance. Pettis was also awarded "Best Song" for her "Nine to Five Girl," which she performs here, accompanied by the Mountain Stage Band. Pettis released her self-titled debut album last month, and is currently finishing college in Austin, Texas. The other winners of the 2009 Mountain Stage NewSong contest are Liz Longley, Reed Waddle, David Via and Betty Soo."
